Wet Weekend Ahead

A front stalling in the area this weekend will combine with plenty of moisture around to produce beneficial rains across the area. Skies will stay mostly cloudy, which will keep temperatures down, struggling to reach the mid 80s for highs. The clouds and cooler temperatures will limit chances of thunder, but the showers themselves will produce heavy downpours. Be careful if driving in areas of heavy rain! A little more sun could come out on Monday, and rain chances should decrease as we head through the first couple days of the new week.

Tropics:

A new depression has formed just north of South America near the Windward Islands. It is expected to become a tropical storm (Felix) this weekend. The track will remain generally west and the long-range outlook keeps it well south of the United States.

Wet Weather for the Weekend

There is a surface low-pressure system in the southeast. The low will not move much over the next few days. Also, there is a cold front that will move through on Saturday. The low and cold front will allow for unsettled weather over the holiday weekend. For today, more clouds than sun with showers and storms likely. The rain may be heavy at times. The afternoon high will be in the upper 80’s. Tonight’s forecast will be mild and muggy with scattered showers and storms. The low will be near 73. For Saturday and Sunday we’ll have lots of clouds with a good chance for showers and storms, mainly in the afternoon. The high temperatures for the weekend will be 86-88. For Labor Day, we’ll have mix of sun and clouds with scattered showers and storms. The afternoon high will be in the upper 80’s. So, there will be a good chance for showers/storms over the holiday. If you are making plans for outdoor activities the best time to get them in will be in the morning. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!!

Tropics:

There are a few areas the hurricane center has been talking about the last few days. I think the only area that will have the best chance to develop will be the tropical wave (94l) that is just east of the Windward Islands. The wave is gaining thunderstorms around the center, and I would not be surprised to see the wave become a tropical depression today. If the wave develops it will continue on its westerly motion into the Caribbean. The models that develop the wave show it making a west track into the western Caribbean, and having no impact on the United States.

Higher Chance of Rain

A weak front to the northwest will approach the area Friday, then stall out near us over the weekend. Low pressure is not developing offshore as previously expected, which would have helped bring drier air into the area. Therefore, rain chances are going back up for much of the holiday weekend. Temperatures may touch 90 on Friday, with a good chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Highs will be in the upper 80s Saturday through Monday, possibly the mid 80s one day if there is enough cloud cover. Expect scattered downpours, with the best coverage during the afternoons.

Another Warm and Humid Day

For today, we’ll have a mix of sun and clouds with isolated showers and storms in the afternoon. The high will be in the lower 90’s. For tonight, there will be lots of clouds with a slight chance for a shower. The low temperature will drop to near 74. A front will stall out north of the area, along with a weak surface low that will develop in the southeast. The low will allow for scattered showers and storms for Friday into the weekend. The afternoon highs will be lower due to more clouds in the afternoon. The highs for Friday through the weekend will be in the upper 80’s. For Labor Day, a mix of sun and clouds and the high will be near 88.

Tropics:

There is a low east of Florida drifting south. The low may develop into a tropical depression by the weekend. The low will begin moving northeast by the beginning of next week.

Also there is a tropical wave east of the Leeward Islands. The wave is moving west. The tropical wave does not show signs of development this morning. The computer models don’t show much development from the tropical wave.

Hot and Humid to Finish the Week

Temperatures will reach the low 90s the next couple days with sunshine and some clouds. Rain chances look minimal on Thursday, with a slight chance Friday afternoon. A cold front will push through by Saturday, and some moisture behind the front could result in scattered downpours. The front should move just to our south and allow highs to drop into the upper 80s for Sunday and Labor Day.

Weak low pressure well offshore will likely drift south the next day or so then meander east of Florida and north of the Bahamas through the weekend. Some development of this system into a tropical storm is possible in the next few days, but the above-mentioned front will keep the system offshore. The system should eventually pull northeast, if not this weekend, then by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. The combination of this system to our east-southeast and high pressure developing to our north this weekend may benefit the area by causing breezy conditions Sunday and Labor Day, making it feel more pleasant.

A Warm and Humid Day

For today, we’ll have a mix of sunshine and clouds; highs will be in the lower nineties and for tonight, a low around seventy-four degrees. And for the next couple of days, we’ll have a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the lower nineties with our next chance of rain coming on Saturday. Lows will drop down into the lower seventies and then by the weekend, we will start to see some upper eighties in the forecast.

Tropics:

A low pressure is centered south and east of Wilmington, NC. There is a chance that this low could develop into a tropical depression. The good news is: with the counter-clockwise rotation, it will push some drier air into the region.

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

Less Chance of Rain

Low pressure developing well off the Carolinas coast will remain nearly stationary through the end of the week, and then get pushed northeast this weekend by a cold front. Drier air wrapping around this developing system should help to cut down on our rain chances through Friday. There still is a slight chance of a downpour in the afternoon, though. Highs will be in the low 90s through Friday, then should drop into the upper 80s by Sunday as onshore breezes develop behind the front. Rain chances will likely increase over the weekend and into next week.

Tropics:

The system mentioned above could develop slowly, but will be no threat to our area as it will move northeast this weekend.

A system about halfway between Africa and the Lesser Antilles has a chance to develop some the next few days, though conditions are not entirely favorable aloft. It is very far south (near 10 deg. latitude) and figures to continue moving mainly west into the Caribbean this weekend.

Lunar Eclipse:

Here are some pictures taken by Melanie Burney in Baxley of Tuesday morning's total lunar eclipse. Thanks, Melanie!

More Storms this Afternoon

Today will bring a mix of sun and clouds and a good chance for showers and storms in the afternoon. Today’s high will be near 92. For tonight, we’ll have mostly cloudy skies with evening showers and storms. Tonight’s low will be in the mid 70’s. Wednesday through Friday there will be a mix of sun and clouds with a slight chance for a stray shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon. The highs will be in the lower 90’s with lows in the lower 70’s. The holiday weekend is looking a little cooler, with highs 88-90. Over the weekend there will be a chance for storms in the afternoon.

Tropics:

There are a few tropical waves in the Atlantic, but none of the waves show tropical development. The month of August will end quietly in the tropics.

Monday, August 27, 2007

High Humidity, Scattered Downpours

A very humid air mass will remain in place as we go through Tuesday. Clouds will give way to some sun as we go through the day, then scattered downpours will develop in the afternoon. Highs will not be far from 90 across the area. Wednesday and Thursday should see a decrease in coverage of downpours as slightly less humid air filters in. Looking ahead to the weekend, a cold front is forecast by computer models to cross the area Friday night and Saturday. This should drop our highs down into the upper 80s over the weekend.

There is a total lunar eclipse that peaks at 6:37 Tuesday morning. The moon will begin to be eclipsed at 4:51am. Clouds are expected across much of the area, though, so viewing chances will be limited to none.

Storms Possible Today

A front is stalled out in the southeast. The front will allow for storms over the next few days. The best chance for thunderstorms will be in the afternoon. The storms may produce heavy rain and gusty winds. The afternoon highs for the workweek will be in the lower 90’s, and the morning lows will be near 73. By the end of the week we’ll have a mix of sun and clouds with less chances for storms. Have a good week!

Tropics:

The month of August will end quietly in the tropics. The computer models don’t show signs of tropical development for the next five days. I’m sure we will have tropical development by the first of September. The peak of hurricane season is September the 12th.

Weekend Weather

Tonight: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 77. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm.

Sunday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 90. Calm wind becoming south southwest between 6 and 9 mph.

Sunday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 8pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 78. South southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm.

Friday, August 24, 2007

Typical Late August Weather

Expect little change in our weather for the next several days. The weather will be dominated by a light onshore breeze, which will help to keep temperatures under control. The humidity will remain high, though, and scattered downpours will remain in the forecast. These could occur during the late morning near the coast, with inland areas more likely to see one during the afternoon. Highs will average near 91 and could be a couple degrees hotter west of Interstate 95. Temperatures will top out in the upper 80s at the beaches.

Thursday, August 23, 2007

Not as Hot

Temperatures were a few degrees cooler across the area today and will continue to stay down the next several days as the wind direction will mostly come from the southeast. The humidity will stay up, though, and most days there will be at least a slight chance of downpour triggered by the sea breeze boundary. So, expect a mix of sun and clouds Friday through Sunday. Highs should be near 91 with slightly higher readings west of Interstate 95 and lower readings at the beach.

Storms Possible Today

After the hot weather over the last few days we will have some cooler temperatures with a chance for showers and storms. For today, we’ll have a mix of sun and clouds with scattered showers and storms. The high will be near 93. For tonight, partly cloudy with evening showers and storms, the low will be near 74. We will hold on to chances for afternoon storms for Friday with highs in the lower 90’s. Saturday and Sunday we will have a mix of sun and clouds with a chance for showers and storms in the afternoon. The high temperatures this weekend will be in the lower 90’s. We need some rain in Savannah - we are 7.50” below average for the year.

Tropics:

Dean: Dean made his second landfall yesterday in Mexico. Dean is moving over Mexico producing heavy rain. If Dean can hold together some circulation, he will have a chance to re-develop in the Pacific Ocean.

The tropics are very quiet. I don’t see any tropical development for the next few days.

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Cooldown to Begin

A weak tropical wave in the Bahamas will push west towards Florida Thursday. North of this feature, we will see a transition to southeast breezes, which will allow temperatures to be less hot. Highs will reach the low to mid 90s Thursday, then may not get above 90 Friday. Expect a mix of sun and clouds through the weekend and highs not far from 90 with continued onshore breezes. These breezes will keep the humidity up and there will be at least a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm each day.

Tropics:

Hurricane Dean has moved into Mexico and will continue to weaken, but causing significant heavy rains and flooding there. Elsewhere, there are no signs of development.

Very Hot Temperatures Today

* Heat Advisory * We will have another hot day. There will be a lot of sun and very hot temperatures. The afternoon high will be near 98 with the heat index near 105-110. For tonight, clear skies the low will be near 74. The temperatures will remain hot into Thursday with highs in the mid 90’s. A tropical wave in the Bahamas this morning will bring rain to Florida, but it will bring our area an onshore flow. The onshore flow will allow the temperatures to be cooler over the weekend. Saturday and Sunday there will a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the lower 90’s. There will be a chance for showers and storms in the afternoon for Saturday and Sunday. Stay cool today!!

Tropics:

Hurricane Dean:

Dean will make landfall later today in Mexico. Dean tracked across the Yucatan yesterday, which weakened Dean to a Category one. Dean will bring heavy rain to Mexico for the next few days.

Tropical Wave:

The tropical wave that stretches from the Bahamas to Cuba will move west at 15-20 mph. The upper level winds are not favorable for tropical development.

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Very Hot for Wednesday

Temperatures will reach the upper 90s Wednesday and the heat index could go over 105 in the afternoon. So be careful and drink plenty of water if you're going to be outside! There is a slight chance of a thunderstorm moving south into the area Wednesday evening. Temperatures should ease down into the mid 90s Thursday and Friday. Onshore breezes should develop by Saturday, allowing highs to drop into the low 90s. This could also add enough moisture to result in a few scattered downpours.

Tropics:

Hurricane Dean has moved past the Yucatan Peninsula and is moving west and will make a second landfall in Mexico on Wednesday. The storm weakened to category 1 over land, and could go up to a category 2 before the second landfall. The system will then get torn up by the mountains in Mexico, but not before it dumps a lot of rain, including around Mexico City.

A disturbance east of the Bahamas continues to move west-northwest. It remains disorganized and upper level winds are unfavorable for development. It should bring an increased chance for downpours in Florida within a couple days.

Hot Afternoon Temperatures

We will continue to see hot temperatures through much of the week. Today will be mostly sunny with a few clouds in the afternoon and a high near 98. Tonight will be mostly clear with a low near 74. The hot weather will stick around on Wednesday. For Wednesday, mostly sunny and remaining hot, the high will be near 98. There will be a little cool down for the weekend. The highs by Saturday will be in the mid 90’s.

Tropics:

Hurricane Dean:
Dean made landfall early this morning on the Yucatan Peninsula near the cruise ship port of Costa Maya at 4:30 a.m. Dean was a powerful category five hurricane at landfall with winds of 165 mph. Dean will go down in the record books. Dean was the ninth lowest pressure on record for the Atlantic basin, with pressure of 906 mb. Dean was the third lowest pressure at landfall. Also, the last land falling category 5 hurricane was Andrew in 1992. Dean will move across the Yucatan Peninsula today and weaken into a category one or two storm. Then move into the Bay of Campeche. Dean will have the chance to intensify into a category three before the second landfall in Mexico on Wednesday. Tropical Wave: The tropical wave north of Leeward Islands is not looking as good as yesterday. Most of the thunderstorms have weakened. The wave will continue to move west over the next few days.

Monday, August 20, 2007

More Very Hot Weather

Temperatures will reach the mid to upper 90s Tuesday and Wednesday with a heat index near 105 both afternoons. Rain chances will remain very low. Temperatures should drop slightly into the mid 90s Thursday and Friday. Onshore breezes are likely to develop for the weekend, dropping our highs at least down to the low 90s. The ocean breezes could also bring in some showers this weekend.

Tropics:

Powerful Hurricane Dean reached Category 5 status early Monday evening. It will move onshore the Yucatan Peninsula near Chetumal, then weaken as it travels west across land. It will likely strengthen some when it goes into the Gulf of Mexico, then it will make a second landfall in mainland Mexico, probably around a Cat. 2 hurricane. Texas will have no problems from the storm.

Elsewhere, a weak disturbance NNE of the Lesser Antilles (near 60 degrees west) will track west-northwest the next few days. Some slow development is possible towards the end of the week. Computer models show some type of system could move across south or central Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico over the weekend.

Hot Temperatures in the Forecast

The hot temperatures are back into the forecast for the week. For today, mostly sunny, and the afternoon temperatures will be in the mid 90’s. For tonight, mostly clear, with the morning low near 74. Tuesday and Wednesday will be the hottest days of the workweek. The high will be in the upper 90’s with mostly sunny skies. Thursday and Friday we’ll have a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the mid-90’s. There will be a chance for afternoon storms by the end of the week. Have a good week!

Tropics:

Hurricane Dean: Dean is a strong category four hurricane. Dean passed just south of Jamaica on Sunday. Dean is quickly moving west and will move into the Yucatan Peninsula on Tuesday. Then Dean will make his second landfall in Mexico on Wednesday night. So, it looks like Dean will not have much of an impact on the United States.

Tropical Wave: There is a tropical wave north of Leeward Islands. The wave has the potential to develop over the next few days. The tropical wave will continue to move west through the next 3-4 days. Any tropical development will be slow.

Friday, August 17, 2007

A Little Cooler for the Weekend

* Heat Advisory * For today, there will be a mix of sun and clouds with scattered storms in the afternoon. The afternoon high will be 96, with a heat index of 105. For tonight, evening showers and storms, and some of the storms will be strong. The low for tonight will be near 74. The weekend will be a little cooler with highs in the lower/mid 90’s. There will be a slight chance for storms in the afternoon. Have a good weekend!

Tropics:

Hurricane Dean:

Dean is moving quickly across St. Lucia this morning. Dean is a category two storm. Dean will be a major hurricane by the weekend. The hurricane will continue on its westerly course through the weekend. Dean will pass just south of Jamaica on Sunday. The computer models take Dean over the northern tip of the Yucatan on Monday. The question will be after the five-day period. The track of Dean will depend on the strength of the high pressure to the north of the hurricane. If the high is strong enough the storm will move west across the Yucatan and into Mexico. If the high is weak, then Dean will bend to the north into the Gulf of Mexico, and make landfall along the Gulf coast states. The latest track form the hurricane center:

Slight Relief This Weekend

Friday will be a very hot day, even a little hotter than Thursday with highs reaching the mid to upper 90s. There looks to be enough going on to perhaps spark a few thunderstorms in the area late in the afternoon or in the evening. Breezes should go to the southeast on Saturday and remain in that general direction into next week. This will allow high temperatures to ease down into the low 90s by Sunday.

Tropics:

The remnants of Erin are causing unwanted heavy rain in south-central Texas.

The main story is Hurricane Dean, currently just east of the Lesser Antilles island chain. Dean is moving quickly west and will pass into the Eastern Caribbean Sea on Friday. The storm is up to a Category 2 with near 100 mph max winds. More strengthening is likely as it move west or west-northwest across the Caribbean this weekend into early next week. Conditions appear to be favorable for this to be at least a Category 4 as it moves into the Western Caribbean Sunday and Monday. As for where it goes beyond that, it may move across the Yucatan Peninsula and then make a second landfall in mainland Mexico, or it could possibly turn more northwest and threaten areas from Texas to Louisiana. People with interests along the central and western Gulf coasts should closely monitor the storm.

Hot and Humid Today

We will have another hot day. The afternoon high will be near 97 with heat index near 105. There is a heat advisory in effect for today. There will be a slight chance for a stray thunderstorm in the afternoon. For tonight, partly cloudy, and muggy, and the low will be near 74. We’ll have one more hot day on Friday before a little cool down for the weekend. The high on Friday will be near 97. Saturday and Sunday there will be a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the lower/mid 90’s. A thunderstorm will be possible in the afternoon over the weekend. I’m sure everyone is glad to see temperatures back closer to average by the weekend.

Tropics:

Tropical Depression Erin: Erin has weakened to a tropical depression. Erin made landfall this morning near Lamar, Texas. Erin will continue to bring heavy rain to the coast of Texas for the next two days. Then Erin will become a remnant low by Saturday.

Hurricane Dean: Dean was upgraded to a hurricane this morning. As of 8 a.m. Dean had winds of 80 mph. Dean is quickly moving west at 24 mph. The hurricane will move quickly through the Caribbean Sea. The models are showing Dean will pass just south of Jamaica, and near the Yucatan by Tuesday as a category 4 hurricane. Beyond the five day forecast Dean should move west, and make his second landfall in Mexico.

Wednesday, August 15, 2007

Slightly Less Hot This Weekend

Temperatures will climb to the mid to upper 90s through Friday, with the heat index reaching near 105 each afternoon. Rain chances continue to look pretty low, but an isolated late day thunderstorm can't be ruled out. Highs should drop to near 94 Saturday and into the low 90s Sunday.

Tropics:

The feature in the Gulf of Mexico is now Tropical Storm Erin. It will continue to move west-northwest towards the lower Texas coast. It could strengthen a little before landfall, but not enough to become a hurricane.

Tropical Storm Dean continues to churn about 900 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. It will continue moving between west and west-northwest until it reaches the Caribbean by Saturday. There is fairly good agreement in the computer models that the storm will continue to track west-northwest across much of the Caribbean over the weekend and into next week. It should strengthen to a Category one hurricane on Thursday, and should continue to strengthen as it moves across the Caribbean this weekend; a dangerous situation for some areas possibly including Jamaica.

Another Hot Day

Today will be mostly sunny and hot, with the high near 98. There is a Heat Advisory again today, with the heat index near 105-110. The rest of the workweek will be the hot with lots of sun. The afternoon high will be in the upper 90’s with a heat index near 105-110. The next five days there will be a slight chance for afternoon thunderstorms. A cold front will approach from the north on Saturday. The front will bring the area some cooler air with highs on Sunday back into the lower 90’s. Have a good Wednesday!

Tropics:

Tropical Depression #5: The tropical depression is looking much better this morning. The depression is located in the Gulf of Mexico and is moving WNW towards the Texas coast. The depression may be upgraded to a tropical storm (Erin) later today. Tropical Storm watch is up for the coast of Texas. The depression will bring heavy rain to Texas on Thursday.

Tropical Storm Dean: The tropical storm will become a hurricane by the end of the week. Most computer models show the storm becoming the first hurricane of the 2007 hurricane season on Friday. The models seem to be coming in line with a west track into the Caribbean Sea. On this track, the storm would have no impact on our weather in Georgia or South Carolina, which is good news. Here is the latest track from the National Hurricane Center: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/083540.shtml?5day?large#contents

Tuesday, August 14, 2007

The Heat Index Climbs Again

Hotter temperatures have returned, and highs will remain in the mid to upper 90s through the end of the week. Each afternoon, the heat index is likely to be above 105. Rain chances look minimal through Friday. Computer models forecast the wind direction to change to the southeast this weekend, which should knock down our temps some.

Tropics:

A cluster of thunderstorms and gusty winds in the south-central Gulf of Mexico will move west-northwest towards the upper Mexican coast and south Texas. The system may become a tropical depression or storm before it reaches land.

The tropical depression in the eastern Atlantic is now Tropical Storm Dean. It is located about halfway between Africa and the Lesser Antilles and is moving quickly west. It should arrive at the entrance to the Caribbean Sea Friday night or Saturday, possibly as a hurricane. The most likely track after that through the weekend moves the storm towards the west-northwest, possibly moving close to the island of Hispaniola.

The Hot Weather Continues

* Heat Advisory for today * There will be a lot of sun through the day, and a slight chance for a stray thunderstorm in the afternoon. Today’s highs will be near 98 with the heat index near 105-110. For tonight, mostly clear skies with mild temperatures. The lows will be near 74. I don’t see much of a change in the weather for Wednesday through Friday. The highs for the week will stay in the upper 90’s. A cold front will move our way by the weekend; the front should cool things down closer to seasonal averages by Saturday and Sunday.

Tropics:

The tropics are very active. There are two areas we are watching right now. The tropical low that is near the Yucatan Peninsula has a chance to become tropical depression #5 later today. The low will bring heavy rain to Texas on Wednesday. The 2nd area is tropical depression #4. The tropical depression is moving very quickly in the open Atlantic. The depression should become a tropical storm (Dean) in the next few days. The low will be near the Leeward Islands by Sunday. The computer models all show a different track of the low after five days. Some take the system towards south Florida, and others up the east coast. Whatever track the low takes, we will be watching it very closely in the Future Trak weather center.

Monday, August 13, 2007

Another Hot Week

Temperatures are heading back into the mid to upper 90s this week. Some areas, mainly west of Interstate 95, could touch 100 a couple days. The heat index could reach near 105 Tuesday afternoon, so again be careful if doing anything outdoors. We have seen isolated thunderstorms heading into Monday evening, but for most of the week rain chances look minimal.

Tropics:

A disturbance near the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula will move west-northwest towards mainland Mexico or possibly far southern Texas through the middle of the week. Some development of this system is possible before it reaches land.

The system in the far eastern Atlantic is now Tropical Depression Four. It will soon be classified as Tropical Storm Dean. This system will continue to move generally west for a while, likely arriving at the Lesser Antilles around Saturday. It may be a hurricane by the time it reaches there.

The Heat Coming Back

The heat will be returning across the area today. There will be lots of sun through the day with highs near 96, and heat index near 105. For tonight, mostly clear and mild, the morning lows will be near 74. The temperatures will warm back into the upper 90’s from Tuesday through Thursday. I don’t see great chances for rain during the week…maybe a shower or thunderstorm by the end of the week. Have a good Monday!

Tropics:

The tropics are becoming active. I’m sure we will have our 4th named storm (Dean) by the middle of this week. There are two areas that will need to be watched this week. First, in the NW Caribbean Sea there is an area of disorganized thunderstorm. The area doesn’t show signs of tropical development today. The 2nd area is the tropical wave that moved off the coast of Africa over the weekend. Looking at the visible/infrared satellite this morning, the tropical wave (90l) is becoming much better organized. I would not be surprised if the tropical wave becomes a tropical depression later today. Most of the computer models keep the tropical wave moving west over the next seven days.

Sunday, August 12, 2007

Hotter Temperatures Will Return

High temperatures only reached near 90 on Sunday, a break from the extreme heat we saw at the end of last week. It looks like temperatures will move up a few degrees Monday and Tuesday once again, though. Fortunately this time, the humidity should not be as high. Still, the heat index will likely reach to near 105 by Tuesday afternoon, and we can expect the above average heat to last throughout the week. Rain chances look minimal for the entire week.

Tropics:

The main feature that will be watched is a disturbance in the far eastern Atlantic. There is a good chance it will become a tropical storm (Dean) in the next 2 or 3 days. The system will continue to move west or west-northwest through the end of the week, likely moving into the Caribbean Sea this weekend.

There is a disturbance in the western Caribbean that will move across the Yucatan Peninsula and then head west towards mainland Mexico. Some development is possible with this system before it reaches mainland Mexico around the middle of the week.

Not as Hot Today

For Sunday, a mix of sun and clouds there will be a slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm. The afternoon high will be near 92. For tonight, partly cloudy with mild temperatures, the low will be near 72. Monday through Friday will be hot with highs near 96. There will be a slight chance for an afternoon thunderstorm. Have a good week!

Tropics:

The tropics are showing signs of life today. A strong tropical wave moved off the coast of Africa yesterday. Most of the computer models show that the wave (90l) will develop into a tropical storm (Dean) this week. We will need to keep a close eye on this through the week.

Friday, August 10, 2007

Slight Relief Sunday

Saturday will be another day of excessive heat, with highs reaching the upper 90s and a few spots touching 100. The heat index will again be near 115 during the afternoon. A weak cold front will be approaching, and that may spark a thunderstorm late in the day. That front will try to move through Saturday night before it stalls and dissipates. Temperatures will be a few degrees lower Sunday, with highs near 94. There may be a thunderstorm in the area on Sunday, also. We will not get rid of the heat, as highs will again be near 94 on Monday, and indications are the temperature may push back up a little by Tuesday.

Tropics:
A system may develop near the Yucatan Peninsula and move west across the western Gulf of Mexico towards the Mexican coast next week. There is also a system moving off of Africa that could develop in the next few days as it moves west.

Have a good weekend!

More Hot Weather

The heat will continue for today and Saturday. Excessive heat warning in effect; the heat index will be near 115. Another hazy, hot, and humid day with afternoon high will be near 99. For tonight, much of the same with hazy skies and muggy conditions, low will be near 78. Saturday, will be hot with highs near 98, there is a chance for afternoon showers and storms. The storms that fire up may produce heavy rain. A cold front will try to push through on Sunday, but will have a hard time moving south of the area. The high for Sunday will be in the lower 90’s with a chance for storms in the afternoon.

Tropics:

The tropics have been free of tropical cyclones, but that may change. The computer models are showing a tropical system may develop off the African coast by the first of next week. The Future Trak weather center will be the first to let you know when a tropical depression forms. Have a good weekend!

Thursday, August 9, 2007

Dangerous Heat to Continue

The temperatures and humidity are combining to produce very uncomfortable conditions across the area. The dewpoints are what cause the heat index to shoot through the roof. Normally, our dewpoints are in the low 70s during the summer, which is quite humid (tropical), but bearable. This week our dewpoints have crept up to near 80! This is producing a heat index between 115 and 120 in many areas during the afternoon. We will again see this on Friday, with the actual temperatures topping out at or just below 100. An isolated thunderstorm is possible in the afternoon. There will be a better chance for scattered thunderstorms over the weekend during the afternoon and evening hours, thanks to a weak cold front arriving. This front should move through Saturday night before stalling and dissipating Sunday and Monday. Some drop in temperatures and humidity can be expected Sunday, with highs dropping into the low 90s. Unfortunately, this slight relief may just be temporary, as long range computer models are projecting a return to at least the mid 90s Monday and Tuesday. Be safe!

Another Very Hot Day

The end of the heat wave is in sight, but we will have two more very hot days before temperatures get closer to average by the weekend. The high pressure that brought us the very hot weather will begin moving west over the next two days. For today, an *Excessive Heat Warning* is in effect, with hazy skies and very hot temperatures. The afternoon high will be near 98 with the heat index near 115. For tonight, hazy skies, warm, and muggy with the low near 78. Friday will be our last very hot day with a mix of sun and clouds. The afternoon high will be near 98 and heat index near 115. Saturday and Sunday there will be a chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon with highs near 93. Always remember don’t forget about your pets with the very hot weather.

Tropics:

The tropical Atlantic is very quiet. I still don’t see tropical development through the weekend.

No Relief Through Friday

Very hot temperatures and high humidity will continue to make outdoor activities miserable and dangerous through the end of the week. Highs will be in the upper 90s through Friday, with the heat index possibly exceeding 110 each afternoon. Saturday's highs will be in the mid to upper 90s with a better chance of an afternoon thunderstorm, thanks to an approaching cold front. The front will slide to our south on Sunday, and highs should drop into the low 90s and the humidity will return to near average. So, it will still be hot, but better than now. In the meantime, try to avoid outdoor activities during the prime heat of the afternoon into the early evening.

Dangerously Hot Temperatures Today

The heat wave will continue for today. An Excessive heat warning will be in effect for today, so the heat index will be near 115. The day will be mostly sunny, hazy, hot, and humid, with the afternoon high near 100. There will be a slight chance for an afternoon thunderstorm. For tonight, hazy skies, mild, and muggy with tonight’s low near 78. The heat will continue for Thursday and Friday with afternoon highs in the upper 90’s. The weekend will be cooler with highs 92-94, and there will be scattered showers and storms in the afternoon. Stay cool today!!

Tropics:

I don’t see tropical development for the next five days. I’m sure the tropics will become active after August 15th.

Excessive Heat Continues

The high at the Savannah airport today was 98, 2 degrees shy of tying a record. The humidity made it feel like it was around 110. Expect a repeat each day through Friday. Continue to use caution if outdoors, especially during the afternoons and early evenings. Drink plenty of water before and during any activities. There may be a brief pop-up downpour in your area, like we saw today. Otherwise, rain chances will remain limited through at least Thursday. Some relief can be expected this weekend. A cold front will approach on Saturday, which should be another very hot day. The front should cause a better chance of afternoon/evening thunderstorms Saturday, then highs should drop into the low 90s Sunday behind the front. Stay cool as much as possible!

* Excessive Heat Warning Today *

Another hot day on tap with heat index this afternoon near 110-115. Today will be hazy, hot, and humid with the afternoon high near 99. The record high for Savannah today is 100, which was set in 1899. We’ll see if we beat that record. For tonight, mostly clear and muggy; lows will be near 78. The hot weather will continue for most of the week with afternoon highs in the upper 90’s and lows in the upper 70’s. There will be a little cool down by Sunday with highs near 93. I don’t see much of a chance for rain this week, but there will be a slight chance for thunderstorms away from the coast each afternoon.

Tropics:

I don’t see any tropical development for the next few days. There are a few areas to watch, but none show signs of tropical development.

Hottest Week of the Summer

A giant ridge of high pressure will control our weather through the end of the week. Besides plenty of sun, we will experience temperatures reaching the upper 90s each day through at least Friday. The combination of the temperatures and humidity will produce heat index values near 110 during the afternoons. Please exercise caution if going outdoors for any length of time; drink plenty of water and take breaks in the shade. Rain chances will be very isolated for much of the week. It looks like we should see some slight relief from the extreme heat by the end of the weekend.

A Hot Work Week

The heat and humidity will be here for the next four to five days. A Heat Advisory is in effect for today. For Monday, mostly sunny, hot, and humid with the afternoon highs near 98. The heat index will be 105-110. Tonight will be mostly clear, warm and muggy with morning lows near 76. Tuesday through Wednesday will continue to be hazy, hot, and humid with mostly sunny skies and the afternoon highs near 98. By Friday, a few clouds in the afternoon will allow the temperatures to be a little cooler, with highs in the mid 90’s. There will be a slight chance for afternoon thunderstorms all week long. Stay cool this week!!

Tropics:

The tropics are quiet to start the week. There are a few tropical waves in the open Atlantic that are producing thunderstorms. The tropical waves don’t show signs of becoming organized. I don’t see tropical development for the next few days.

Improving Weather This Weekend

The remnants of a frontal boundary and a disturbance have caused a soggy Friday across the area. While rain has been heavy at times, it has been spread out over a long enough period of time to not cause any serious problems. Expect some occasional rain overnight. There still could be a period of heavy rain in a few spots, but I do not expect there to be enough to cause significant flooding. Some sun will return during the day on Saturday and temperatures should at least reach near 90 degrees. There will still be a slight chance of a downpour, but overall it should be much drier. Breezes turning to the southwest and west over the weekend will not only help things dry out, but turn temperatures much hotter. We should see the mid 90s on Sunday and into the beginning of the new week. Some upper 90s could be possible as well. Have a good weekend!

A Wet Friday

We will see some much needed rainfall today. For today, more clouds than sun with showers and storms likely. The rain will be heavy at times; some areas may receive 1-2” of rain. The afternoon high will be near 86. For Saturday, a mix of sun and clouds with scattered storms in the afternoon; highs will be near 92. Sunday will be the best day of the weekend with a mix of sun and clouds, and afternoon highs near 93. The heat will return in full force by the first of next week. We will see afternoon highs back into the mid 90’s by Monday into the end of next week.

Tropics:

The low pressure we have been watching all week is now in the central Caribbean Sea. The flare up of thunderstorms yesterday morning has decreased. I don’t see this developing into a tropical depression. The wave of low pressure is moving quickly to the west, so it will reach Central America before the low has a chance to develop.

Have a good weekend!

Rain Likely for Friday

Moisture associated with the remnants of a front to our south is starting to come back north. A disturbance associated with this moisture will likely move northeast across the area during the day Friday. This will lead to numerous showers and isolated thunder. Rainfall could be locally heavy at times. Temperatures should remain below 90 due to more cloud cover and wet weather. Saturday should feature more sun; there could be some lingering moisture that could set off a downpour, but highs should reach the low 90s. It looks like temperatures will turn hotter for Sunday and the new week due to breezes developing out of the west. Readings in the mid 90s will be likely by Monday, with highs in the upper 90s possible.

Tropics: Low pressure in the Eastern Caribbean will track quickly west the next 2 or 3 days. There is a chance it could become classified before it moves over land in Central America.

Rain Possible for Friday

Today will be much like Wednesday with a mix of sun and clouds, and isolated showers in the afternoon. Today’s high will be near 90. The models are not handling the track of the low that will develop in the Gulf today. So the forecast for Friday has the potential to change. For Friday, I will go with more clouds than sun with scattered showers and storms likely, mainly in the afternoon. Some of the rain may be heavy at times. With more clouds for Friday afternoon temperatures will be cooler, with highs in the upper 80’s. Saturday there will be a mix of sun and clouds with isolated showers and storms in the afternoon; highs will be in the lower 90’s. Sunday looks dry with a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures in the lower 90’s.

Tropics:

There are two areas that we will be watching over the next few days. The first area will be in the Gulf of Mexico. There is a stalled out front across Florida that stretches into the Gulf. I don’t see it getting strong as the low moves over land by late Friday and Saturday. The second area we are still watching is the tropical wave moving through the eastern Caribbean Sea. The thunderstorms look better on satellite this morning, but no change from yesterday. The system will be slow to develop. Most of the computer models don’t develop the tropical wave.

Not too Hot

It is rather warm and humid as to be expected for the first day of August, but it's not as toasty as it can be. Temperatures will remain near 90 for highs through Friday. Rain chances will stay low Thursday, then may increase some Friday as a little higher moisture content tries to return from the south. The weekend should offer a mix of sun and clouds, with highs in the low 90s. There may be enough moisture to support scattered afternoon downpours.

Tropics: A disturbance moving through the Lesser Antilles will continue to track west across the Caribbean. The feature could develop more, but conditions are not entirely favorable. Whether or not it does develop, this system will stay far to our south.

August will Start Out Nice

As we start the month of August there will be mostly sunny skies with afternoon temperatures close to seasonal averages of 92. Tonight will be mostly clear with lows near 72. The dry weather will continue into Thursday, with a mix of sun and clouds with highs near 90. The stalled out front that moved through on Monday night will begin drifting back to the north on Friday. With the front in the area there will be scattered storms in the afternoon on Friday and Saturday. The afternoon highs will be near 90. On Sunday, mix of sun and clouds; afternoon highs will be in the lower 90’s.

Tropics: Tropical storm Chantal developed yesterday. As of this morning Chantal is no longer a tropical storm, as it moves off the coast of Nova Scotia. There is an area of low pressure 300 miles east of the Windward Islands. The low is producing limited thunderstorms (convection). There is a lot of dry air in the Caribbean Sea; the dry air will hinder tropical development. If you would like to see the dry air in the Caribbean go to this web site: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/catl/loop-wv.html
The dark area on the water vapor loop is the dry air/sinking air. So, as the tropical wave moves into the Caribbean the dry air will not allow for fast development. As the wave moves into the western Caribbean, conditions may become more favorable for development.
